Powerful waterfalls, rainbows in the mist, and a completely different experience after dark.
Niagara Falls Was More Impressive Than I Expected
Some places are so famous that you wonder whether they can possibly live up to the photographs.
Niagara Falls is one of them.
We visited in September 2023, and even though I had seen countless pictures of the falls, standing there in person was something else entirely.
The sound of the rushing water, the enormous clouds of mist, and the sheer scale of the waterfalls were incredible.
And what surprised me most was how different the experience felt during the day and at night.
If you're wondering whether the Canadian side of Niagara Falls is worth visiting, here's what made our trip memorable.

The Canadian Side: A Spectacular View
One of the biggest reasons to visit the Canadian side is the sweeping view of the waterfalls.
From the waterfront promenade, you can appreciate the enormous curve of Horseshoe Falls, watch the mist rise into the sky, and see the rushing water from several perspectives.
It's one of those places where you keep stopping to take another photograph, even though you've already taken twenty.
The water seems almost calm in some areas before suddenly disappearing over the edge.
And then there's the sound.
Photographs simply can't capture how powerful it feels.

Rainbows in the Mist
One of my favorite moments was seeing a rainbow appear through the mist.
With the sunlight hitting the spray, the colors stretched across the water and made an already beautiful view even more memorable.
It was one of those little surprises that made me stop and enjoy the moment.
Of course, rainbows depend on the sunlight and weather conditions, so you won't necessarily see one every time.
But if you're lucky enough to catch one, it's beautiful.

Watching the Boats Approach the Falls
From above, we could see sightseeing boats moving toward the waterfalls.
Seeing those little boats surrounded by enormous clouds of mist really puts the size of Niagara Falls into perspective.
The boats looked tiny compared with the waterfalls.
Even from the observation areas, it was fascinating to watch them approach the rushing water.
If you want to experience Niagara Falls from the water, a boat tour is one of the activities worth considering.
Just be prepared to get wet from the spray.

Niagara Falls After Dark Is a Different Experience
I loved the daytime views, but the nighttime scenery was just as memorable.
After sunset, the waterfalls were illuminated with changing colors.
Blue, red, green, and other shades moved across the water, transforming the entire landscape.
From a distance, the glowing falls looked almost unreal.
The surrounding city lights added another layer to the atmosphere.
It was completely different from seeing the natural power of the falls during the day.
If you're planning a visit, I would definitely try to see Niagara Falls both before and after sunset.

The Falls Are Beautiful, but Don't Rush
One thing I appreciated about Niagara Falls was that we didn't need a complicated sightseeing schedule to enjoy it.
Sometimes the best part was simply standing at the railing, watching the water, and taking in the view.
You can spend a surprising amount of time looking at the same waterfall because the mist, light, and colors keep changing.
For travelers who prefer a more relaxed pace, that can be part of the appeal.
You don't have to turn every vacation into a race between attractions.

Is the Canadian Side Better Than the American Side?
Both sides offer different experiences.
The American side gives visitors opportunities to experience the falls from closer viewpoints and within a state park setting.
The Canadian side is especially appealing for its broad panoramic views of Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls.
If photography and sweeping scenery are high on your list, the Canadian side is an excellent choice.
If you have enough time and the necessary travel documents, visiting both sides can give you a more complete experience.
But even if you only visit the Canadian side, there's plenty to enjoy.

Practical Tips for Visiting Niagara Falls
See the falls during the day and at night. The natural scenery and nighttime illumination offer two very different experiences.
Bring a light waterproof jacket. Mist can reach nearby viewing areas, especially when the wind changes.
Wear comfortable walking shoes. You'll likely spend time walking along the promenade and stopping at different viewpoints.
Protect your camera or phone. Water spray can be surprisingly strong near the falls.
Check the illumination schedule. Lighting times and special displays can vary by season and date.
Plan ahead if crossing the border. Make sure you have the appropriate identification and travel documents for entering Canada and returning to the United States.
Allow time to enjoy the views. You don't need to rush from one attraction to another.

Would I Visit Niagara Falls Again?
Absolutely.
Niagara Falls is one of those places that photographs can never fully explain.
The sound, the mist, the powerful water, the unexpected rainbow, and the colorful nighttime lights all made it memorable.
If I visited again, I would still make time to enjoy the falls during both daylight and evening hours.
And I would probably take just as many photographs.
Because sometimes a place really does live up to its reputation.
Niagara Falls was one of those places for me.
