Grand Wailea Maui Review: Is This Luxury Resort Worth It?

Palm trees, ocean breezes, tropical gardens, and unforgettable Hawaiian sunsets.

Maui has always been one of those destinations that feels special the moment you arrive.

During our July trip to Hawaii, we stayed at Grand Wailea, A Waldorf Astoria Resort, located in the beautiful Wailea area of South Maui.

From the moment we entered the resort, it felt like a tropical escape.

Towering palm trees, beautiful landscaping, open-air spaces, and the nearby ocean created exactly the kind of Hawaiian atmosphere I had hoped for.

But Grand Wailea is more than just a beautiful hotel.

It's an enormous resort with gardens, pools, restaurants, and plenty of places to explore.

So, is it worth staying here?

Here's what our experience was like.

First Impressions: A Resort That Feels Like a Tropical Paradise

One of the first things I noticed about Grand Wailea was how beautiful the property looked.

The entrance and lobby were spacious and elegant, with an open design that made the resort feel connected to its tropical surroundings.

There were palm trees everywhere, along with colorful flowers, water features, and carefully maintained gardens.

Walking around the property almost felt like exploring a botanical garden.

What I particularly liked was that the resort didn't feel like a typical city hotel.

The architecture, landscaping, and outdoor spaces were all part of the vacation experience.

Even when we weren't heading to the beach, there was plenty to enjoy just by walking around.

Our Room and Balcony Views

Our room had a comfortable, elegant atmosphere, with neutral colors and a relaxed resort style.

But one of my favorite features was the balcony.

From there, we could see palm trees, landscaped grounds, and the beautiful Hawaiian sky.

It was lovely to step outside and enjoy the warm air without having to leave the room.

For me, a balcony is especially nice when staying somewhere like Maui.

Sometimes the best part of a vacation is having a quiet moment with a beautiful view.

One thing to keep in mind is that Grand Wailea offers different room categories and views. Not every room has the same outlook, so it's worth checking the specific room type before booking.

The Gardens and Grounds Are a Highlight

Grand Wailea is known for its expansive resort grounds, and I can understand why.

There are winding pathways, tropical plants, palm trees, waterfalls and water features throughout the property.

I loved seeing the colorful flowers and greenery.

Some areas felt lively, while others were peaceful and quiet.

We took plenty of photographs while walking around the resort because there seemed to be something beautiful at every turn.

If you enjoy nature and photography, the landscaping alone adds a lot to the experience.

However, the resort is large.

Depending on your room location and where you want to go, you may have a considerable walk between different parts of the property.

That's something worth considering if you prefer a smaller hotel where everything is close together.

Wailea Beach and the Beauty of Maui

One of the biggest reasons to visit Maui is the ocean.

The coastline around Wailea is beautiful, with blue water, sandy beaches, and swaying palm trees.

During our stay, we spent time enjoying the coastal scenery.

Some of my favorite photographs from the trip are simple ocean views, palm trees against the blue sky, and the shoreline stretching into the distance.

Maui has a way of making you slow down.

You don't always need an activity planned.

Sometimes sitting near the water, watching the waves, and enjoying the sunshine is enough.

Grand Wailea's location makes it especially appealing for travelers who want a luxury resort experience close to the beach.

Dining at Grand Wailea and Around Wailea

Food was another memorable part of our Maui trip.

Our photographs include beautifully presented seafood, Japanese-inspired dishes, and several resort dining spaces.

I especially enjoyed the atmosphere of dining in Hawaii.

With tropical surroundings and beautiful weather, even a casual meal can feel like part of the vacation.

We also visited Nobu during the trip, which added another dining experience to our Maui memories.

The presentation of the food was beautiful, and it was fun to enjoy something different from the usual resort meal.

Dining is something I would budget for when planning a luxury Maui vacation.

Restaurants at upscale resorts and in the surrounding Wailea area can be expensive, so it's worth looking at menus and prices ahead of time.

Maui Sunsets Are Something Special

One of my favorite parts of the trip was watching the sky change color in the evening.

The sunset photographs from our stay are beautiful.

Palm trees became silhouettes against shades of orange, pink, and purple.

As the sun went down, the resort took on an entirely different atmosphere.

The warm lighting, tropical gardens, and glowing tiki torches made evening walks especially memorable.

I loved how peaceful everything looked after sunset.

Even without an elaborate evening itinerary, there was something wonderful about simply enjoying the surroundings.

These quiet moments are often what I remember most about a beach vacation.

What to Consider Before Booking

Although Grand Wailea is beautiful, there are a few practical things to think about.

It's a large resort

The grounds are expansive, and walking distances may be longer than expected.

If mobility or convenience is a priority, ask about room locations before booking.

Room views vary

A garden-view room and an ocean-view room can offer very different experiences.

Make sure you understand what you're reserving.

Budget for more than the room

When comparing luxury hotels, consider parking, dining, taxes, resort fees, and other expenses that may apply to your booking.

Think about your vacation style

If you love a large resort with extensive grounds and plenty to explore, Grand Wailea may be a great match.

If you prefer a small, intimate boutique hotel, you may enjoy a different type of property.

Is Grand Wailea a Good Choice for Travelers Over 50?

I think Grand Wailea can be a wonderful choice for mature travelers who appreciate beautiful surroundings, comfortable accommodations, and a relaxing beach vacation.

You can enjoy the gardens, spend time near the ocean, have a leisurely meal, and watch the sunset without feeling the need to fill every hour with activities.

The main consideration is the size of the property.

For anyone who prefers shorter walking distances, choosing a conveniently located room could make the stay more comfortable.

Otherwise, it's a lovely place to slow down and enjoy Maui.

Is Grand Wailea Maui Worth It?

For us, Grand Wailea was a memorable part of our Maui vacation.

The beautiful grounds, tropical atmosphere, ocean scenery, and spectacular sunsets made the experience special.

Whether it's worth the price depends on what you value most.

If your priority is simply having a comfortable place to sleep while exploring the island all day, a less expensive hotel may make more sense.

But if you want the resort itself to be a major part of your vacation, Grand Wailea offers an impressive setting.

For travelers who love beautiful resorts, tropical gardens, and relaxing Hawaiian scenery, Grand Wailea is definitely worth considering.

And looking back through our photographs, I'm reminded of why Maui is a place I'd love to visit again.
